Crystal Bombs are unique weapons created by Sirrus during his interment in the prison age Spire. These bombs don't behave like a conventional bomb which utilizes explosive pressure for it's means of destruction. Instead, crystal bombs "detonate" by discharging stored energy in it's matrix and destabilizing the molecular structure of surrounding objects. essentially turning them into dust.
Discovery and Experimentation[]
While exploring Spire, Sirrus began experimenting with the age's various crystals and discovered that some crystals stored electrical energy and that they would quickly discharge when grounded. When this happens, these crystals exhibit a bright green glow and emit an almost melodic tone. He spent some time using these crystals to create a rudimentary musical instrument.
During this experimentation, he would witness the destructive power of these crystals and wind up severely damaging his lab as it's primarily stone surroundings shook and fell apart around him. Realizing the capabilities of these crystals, he would begin devising a plan to open Spire's linking chamber and using it's linking book to escape.
The linking chamber was made of a special D'ni substance called nara. Sirrus needed some of this material to experiment on, but nara is extremely dense and almost completely indestructible, so chipping pieces off the chamber wasn't an option. Eventually, he tricked his family into giving him a chess set with pieces made of Nara.
Bomb Factory and Escape[]
Sirrus would eventually move his lab to the underside of the main island and turn his instrument into a bomb factory. The bomb creation process starts with the user tuning the instrument to a specific harmony, charging the bombs surrounding them. Next, a bomb is deposited into a tube and sent deeper into the factory, where it lands in a small containment device. Above, a green substance is dispensed and coats the bomb in a layer that insulates it and makes it safe to handle. It finally gets deposited into a small catcher where it can be collected.
After a lot of experimentation, he discovered the frequency that nara would become unstable at and charged his bombs with it. The bomb used to breach the linking chamber was so effective, a large chunk of the chamber's outer wall would break off and fall down the elevator shaft leading to the bomb factory. After escaping Spire, he travelled to Haven, the prison age of his brother, Achenar, and breached that age's linking chamber to free him.
Sirrus would use another bomb to open the security seal used in Tomahna. The security seal getting destroyed had an unintended side-effect. Above Tomahna's linking chamber, someone was standing on a bridge when the bomb detonated causing a minor seismic event and collapsing the bridge. The individual would fall unconscious and, after some time, would wake up and begin investigating what happened.
The bomb's last known use was in Serenia. Sirrus would use one of the age's harvesters to collect an empty memory globe from underwater. After reemerging from the water, Sirrus spots the Stranger and panics, tossing a bomb into the harvester before making his escape. This bomb destroyed most of the harvester's seals and fixtures, but left the main hull intact.
